DON HARRIS CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 9
Councilor Don Harris has resided in District 9 for most of his 25 years in Albuquerque. He is married to Valerie Garcia-Harris, an heir to the Cañón de Carnue Land Grant, whose family has roots in the area as far as records exist. Together, they have five children, and one grandchild, in their blended family. Their children attend or have attended public schools in the District.
Before joining City Council, Don was with the Albuquerque City Attorney’s office and served as a Special Assistant Attorney General. In the City Attorney’s Office, he represented the Albuquerque Police Department.
Don has a long history being active in our community as a coach and referee in the AYSO soccer league (where his kids played) and a volunteer attorney for the Westside AYSO league. He is a former foster parent and an adoptive parent. As a councilor, he has sought to provide assistance to foster parents and to charter schools. He has provided significant funding for Community and Multigenerational Centers in District 9.
Don is an attorney, in private practice, and he spends his time with his family. When he is not working for his constituents or his clients, he does try to find time to play saxophone at his church (Don and Valerie attend Calvary) or gigging around town from time to time, as Don went to music school before law school.
